What is Radiography (X-Ray)

Radiography utilizes a small dose of radiation is directed to an area of a patient to produce an image of an internal structure.  X-rays penetrate the body and are absorbed in varying amounts by the different anatomical structures.  With the development of modern techniques today's x-ray machines use only a fraction of the x-ray dose that was required in earlier years.   Because x-ray imaging is so fast and easy, it is particularly useful in emergency treatment and diagnosis.

Common X-Ray Procedures

Chest x-rays are, by far, the most common x-ray exam.    The allow for measurements of the heart to be taken.  These measurements can be helpful in diagnosing certain heart conditions such as congestive heart failure and enlarged heart.  Chest films can also demonstrate a number of lung problems such as Bronchitis, and Pneumonia.

Abdomen x rays, or x-rays of the stomach, are valuable because a physician may be able to distinguish the organs.  Many organs and the surrounding soft tissues will appear darker because they absorb more of the x-ray dose.  Easily distinguishable, trapped, air pockets also play an important role in providing information which is helpful in evaluating what is going on.  Abdomen films may also expose the presence of kidney or gall stones.

Skeletal x-rays, such as ribs, will absorb larger amounts of the directed rays and will appear milky white on an x-ray film.  Skeletal procedures will usually identify broken bones, bone infections, arthritis or bone malignancies.
