ONCOLOGY SERVICES
The term Oncology relates to the study of and the treatment of cancer.  A number of modalities are utilized in both the diagnosis and  treatment of cancer.  The medical history and physical exam remain the most important diagnostic tool.   In addition, we offer state of the art diagnostic services including CT scanning, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning, X-Ray, Radiation, Biopsy, Blood testing and Pharmaceutical services either on site or at our Niles facility.

Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment for various types of cancer and is usually given
through an IV but some medications can also be taken orally or by injection.  An intricate part of our services are our Chemotherapy Treatment Rooms.  Our Physicians and nurses serve as comprehensive team to deliver the highest level of care throughout treatment.  They provide individualized care, including patient education concerning cancer and chemotherapy treatments, administration and the close monitoring of treatments.  Our nursing staff offers safe, competent and compassionate care for the patients and families they serve; working in tandem with physicians to provide quality patient care based on current research and state of the art strategies.

Our nurses and support staff provide an important role in the care of cancer patients.  Each nurse must successfully pass an annual chemotherapy competency test developed by US Oncology.  An experienced oncology nurse who is certified in oncology nursing through the Oncology Nursing Society supervises the treatment room. Many of our treatment room nurses are also certified through ONS. The treatment room is managed by a certified adult nurse practitioner. Clinical nursing aides are also available to assist the physicians and nurses take care of patients and their families.  Highly qualified nurses coordinate all aspects of patient care, administer chemotherapeutic agents, and provide patient and family education. In addition to administration of chemotherapy, they also assist physicians in various procedures including bone marrow biopsies, thoracentesis, and paracentesis. The nurses have expertise in starting IV's, working with various types of venous access devices, and are knowledgeable about various chemotherapeutic regimens. Additionally, a pharmacist oversees qualified pharmacy technicians who are responsible for admixing all chemotherapeutic agents needed by our treatment room patients.
